Since April 2011, more than 15,000 Inova Alexandria ED patients have benefitted from NoVaRHIO's MEDS-ED program--an electronic medication history exchange that is bringing critical data to the point of care within seconds.
Find out how NoVaRHIO--in conjunction with Inova Health System, General Electric and Picis--is advancing Virginia's HIE agenda.
Established in 2006, the Northern Virginia Regional Health Information Organization Inc. (NoVaRHIOsm) is a consortium of area health care providers, hospitals, business leaders, local governments and universities including George Mason and Northern Virginia Community College. Along with patient advocates from all sectors of the community, NoVaRHIO is working to assure that every northern Virginian will have access to the benefits of a full electronic health information exchange.
NoVaRHIO is a 501(c)3 organization and has received grant funding from the Commonwealth of Virginia, with addtional generous support from our collaborators and contributors.
Our first full-scale pilot project--an initial step in establishing a comprehensive health information exchange in northern Virginia--is underway. Our collaborators include Inova Health Systems, GE Healthcare, Picis and Audacious Inquiry, Inc. The first phase of this project has been funded in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The project has two aspects:
--NoVaRHIO and its collaborators are undertaking a trial to provide Inova Alexandria Emergency Department physicians with patient medication history (with patient permission) to help in diagnosis and in determining the course of treatment during times of great health risk.
--We are in the process of establishing a standards-based health information framework for automating and providing access to the "File of Life". With the help of public health officials from across Planning District 8, we will extend the File of Life effort through community outreach in the coming months. (Please download a hard copy of this document and encourage your family and friends to do the same.)
We hope you’ll contact us to find out more about what’s being done and what we still need to do to make a regional health information exchange—and improved quality of care --a reality for northern Virginia.
